Summer Music Camps 2011

I am excited to offer my summer music camps for the third year, with some exciting changes to the roster.

The Rock and Jazz Camps will be held at Woods Charter School again. There, we use multiple rooms for workshops, master classes and band rehearsals. The day is packed with structured learning, which is augmented by free jam time where the campers may write and create on their own songs.

Offered this year also, all day Drum Camps will be held in the club house at Briar Chapel. Fun for both new and experienced drummers, this camp reinforces the basics while presenting advanced concepts in an approachable manner.

The main focus is performance. From the musical skills they develop to new friends they make, what campers learn here will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

See you at camp!

Rock Camp attendees will begin by learning cover songs by other artists. By studying how these songs are put together, campers will then collaborate to write and perform their own songs.

Jazz Camp attendees will begin by learning standards, tunes that every jazz player needs to know. We will analyze the way melody, harmony and rhythm interact, and have a chance to create our own licks and grooves.

Drum Camp attendees will begin by learning stick techniques, rudiments, reading music, and applying it all to the drum set. After that, the stage is set to experience other areas of percussion ensemble and rhythm section playing.

Your experience at Matt Vooris Music Camps will be fun and educational. Campers will be placed in a band with kids their own age and skill level. You will learn about music theory, ensemble playing, promoting a performance, how to get through a concert, creativity and composition.

Counselors are professional rock and jazz musicians from the Triangle area. Counselors will coach the bands in preparation for the concert at the conclusion of camp.

Past instructors have included Robert Sledge, Greg Humphrys, James Wallace, Mietek Glinkowski, Casey Toll, Charles Cleaver, Louis Rodriguez, Ira Diamant, Jana Privette and Seamus Kenney.
